Crisis Innovation Under Pressure: The Deepwater Horizon Response

Following BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the largest oil spill in history, we facilitated a critical cross-company problem-solving workshop in Houston when traditional containment methods had failed. Brought in by Shell, we guided representatives from multiple oil companies through our systematic innovation methodology, prioritizing existing and realistically available technology over unproven pie-in-the-sky pipedreams. The workshop’s top-rated concept involved drilling relief wells to intercept the original well, enabling both “static kill” and “bottom kill” operations using mud and cement. We are proud to have helped the best minds in the industry to come up with a workable solution while under immense pressure to deliver, and resolve one of the most challenging environmental disasters in history.
